Integration
The Inburgering Exam, Explained Without the Jargon
If you hold a residence permit that carries an integration requirement, you will meet the inburgering exam sooner or later. It is less intimidating once you see that it is a set of separate, individually scheduled components rather than one giant test day.
The language components cover reading, listening, speaking and writing. Most people preparing from scratch need somewhere between nine and eighteen months of consistent study, depending on the required level and how much Dutch they hear day to day.
Beyond language there are components on Dutch society and on orientation to the Dutch labour market. These are knowledge tests rather than language tests, but they are taken in Dutch, so your reading speed matters.
The most common mistake is preparing for the exam instead of learning the language. Exam trainers are useful in the last two months. Before that, general course work builds a base that makes exam practice much faster.
Rules and deadlines around integration change periodically. Always confirm your personal obligation and timeline with the official Dutch government sources or with DUO before making study plans around them.
