Your First 90 Days of Dutch: A Realistic Plan for Expats
Almost every expat in the Netherlands hears the same thing in their first month: "everyone speaks English, you don't need Dutch." It is true right up until the moment you get a letter from the Belastingdienst, join a sports club, or want to be part of the small talk at the office coffee machine.
The goal of your first 90 days is not fluency. It is building a base big enough that Dutch stops feeling like noise. Roughly 600-800 high-frequency words and the present tense will carry you through most everyday errands.
Weeks 1-4: sound and survival. Spend fifteen minutes a day on pronunciation — the Dutch g, ui, and ij are the three sounds that make or break comprehension. Learn greetings, numbers, directions, and the twenty verbs you use daily: zijn, hebben, gaan, komen, willen, kunnen, moeten, weten, zeggen, doen.
Weeks 5-8: structure. Dutch word order is the real hurdle, not vocabulary. Drill the verb-second rule and the way the second verb travels to the end of the sentence. A group course is genuinely worth it here, because you need someone to correct you in real time.
Weeks 9-12: exposure. Switch your phone to Dutch. Read NOS Jeugdjournaal, which is written at roughly A2-B1 level. Watch Dutch television with Dutch subtitles rather than English ones. Ask one colleague to speak only Dutch with you for ten minutes a day.
The single biggest predictor of success is not talent or a fancy app. It is whether you have a recurring, scheduled commitment — a class, a tutor, a language café — that you would feel bad about skipping.
